BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL
The climb is not suitable for children below 16 years old.
The trip to view the Pinnacles is tough and challenging therefore the Park offers it only as a 3 days 2 nights trip to depart at 9.15am.
The pinnacle formations of Gunung Api and Benarat are spectacular examples of this limestone feature. Mulu’s Pinnacles tower above the surrounding landscape, some reaching heights of 40 to 50 metres. Centuries of water have eroded and dissolved the rock into razor sharp spikes which knife skywards through the surrounding rainforest.
After visiting Clearwater and Cave of the Winds (add RM30 per person) and enjoying a picnic lunch climb back into your longboat for another 40 minute ride to Kuala Litut. If you are in luck and the river level is high, you will arrive without pushing the boat too many times. Your boat operator leaves you at the beginning of the trail to Camp 5, he will return in 2 days to pick you up again. You will be walking on flat ground most of the 8km and will arrive in Camp 5 before dark where your World Heritage Guide will meet you and brief you on your stay and tomorrow’s climb.
Camp 5 is a forest shelter that caters to visitors travelling on the Head hunter’s Trail and to those climbing the Pinnacles, As space is limited, reservations are essential. Accommodation is basic, with bathrooms, kitchens, dining room and five rooms with raised sleeping platforms. Sleeping mats are provided but visitors are required to bring their own bedding. Eating facilities at Camp 5 are self-catering with an equipped kitchen that provides gas and utensils for cooking and eating. You need to take enough food for 2 dinners, 2 breakfasts and 2 lunches. Some snack foods such as peanuts, chocolates and soft drinks are on sale at the Camp. Camping in tents is not permitted.
Located beside a clear stream, Camp 5 is an ideal place to swim and relax after your walk. The following morning the hike begins around 7.00am. The trail to the top is only 2.4 km long but rises 1,200 metres to the viewpoint. The last section of the trail is near vertical with rope sections and ladders to climb. Fit, experienced trekkers may reach the top in 2–3 hours, the not so fit around 4–5 hours. For many, the descent is more difficult and can take 5 hours or more. Our safety policy is that we do not take anyone below 16 years up the Pinnacles.
The climb is well worthwhile though as it culminates in spectacular views of the pinnacle formations, some of which tower up to 40 metres high. The trail itself, which climbs steeply from the Melinau Gorge passes through some intriguing limestone forest and as you reach the higher altitudes includes some spectacular pitcher plants (Nepenthes sp.), sightings of rare orchids and Mountain Shrews. You need to take water, snacks, first aid kit, torch just in case, you must have good, flexible trekking shoes. The rocks are slippery and very sharp.
After another night at Camp 5 you retrace your steps back to Park Headquarters OR continue along the Head Hunters Trail to Limbang (we did not manage Head Hunters Trail tour, you may use licensed travel agent guide). If you are catching a plane out of Mulu on this day then it MUST be the second flight, you do not have time to get back for the first flight. It may even be necessary to organize a charter boat for the return trip at extra cost.
RM423 per person includes –
Guiding Fee: Once the climb begins there can be no refund, regardless of why you are unable to reach the top. If the guide decides that you cannot continue due to your fitness levels or conditions on the Pinnacles then you must comply. This is for your safety and the safety of others. It rarely happens that a climb is cancelled due to weather.
Accommodation for 2 nights at Camp 5. Fully equipped kitchens with cooking gas are included.
Long Boat return from Park HQ to Kuala Litut, sharing with others in your group. It is not possible to walk to Camp 5 from Park head quarters. If you have a reason to be back before 1230pm then you need to have your own charter boat.

Park Management will make every effort to put participants into groups. Under no circumstances can this be guaranteed. For reasons beyond our control bookings can be cancelled at the last minute, and you may find yourself part of a group of 1 or 2 participants. If this is the case the cost per person of this trek must increase. For 1 person to do this trek as the only participant the cost is RM1000. For 2 persons the cost is RM650 per person.
